Vedda visit
Sri Lanka’s first people the Vedda or Adivasi have a captiveating story. According to the islands fascinating historical chronicle - the Mahavamsa, it is said that they were the children or descendants of Queen Kuveni, a Yaksha and the wife of Sri Lanka’s legendary first King Vijay (5th BC). However, according to anthropologists, their origins are much older; with some anthropologists dating them back to the stone age. A hunter-gather people, the Veddas have a long history of living harmoniously with nature.
There are three predominant types of Veddas- Gal Veddas or cave-dwelling, who spent their time in forest caves; Muhudu Veddas or Coastal Veddas, that lived on the coastline; and Gam Veddas or village Veddas, that lived off in Chena Cultivation in small huts in village communities.
If you are interested in visiting the Veddas, we recommend spending a few nights in Gal Oya or Mahiyanganaya to visit the communities around these regions and discover hunting techniques and other survival methods they used.
Street food
Sri Lankan food is blessed with variety, texture and tons of spice! Walk down any street, its hard not to find a shop or tiny kiosk churning out snacks or Sri Lankan rice and curry. There are some stand out delights that come to mind. Galle Face Green is a fantastic place just to dig into a variety of typical Sri Lankan street food.
At the open-air restaurants on the Green, you can try koththus and rotis with spicy curry. Kottus are rotis cut up and tossed with vegetables and a meat of your choice. It’s quite a popular meal and comes with a gravy.
Paragliding
Paragliding is an exciting sport that is done in specific places. While there are so many places to try paragliding all over the world, Ella in Sri Lanka is one of the best places for trying this activity.
Paragliding in Sri Lanka exclusively takes place in Ella. It is a prime location for hundreds of foreign visitors. Ella Adventure Park, situated in the outer region of Ella, hosts the paragliding sports. The average flight time for intermediate level is usually 25 minutes. An average pilot is assigned for the adventure. Ella Adventure Park is the only provider of paragliding in the island as of now. However, there are plethora of amazing landscapes avail in the country for whom would like to have adventures like this.
Rock climbing
Sri Lanka’s impressive mountains, amazing rocks and stunning views make the country a true paradise for climbers. Rock climbing is an exhilarating, yet extreme sport that tests the climber's physical and mental strength, endurance, agility and balance. Being a tropical paradise island, Sri Lanka is filled with and has many natural rock formations.
It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner, an experienced professional climber or something in the middle; it has something for everyone. If you are trying out rock climbing for the first time, Sri Lanka is an ideal place to start, as there are various established climbing routes around the country. The country has many simple and safe climbing routes with guides who are ready to help you on your first climb.
Whale/dolphin Watching in Sri Lanka
Whale watching is one of the most spectacular experiences to have in Sri Lanka. Just imagine these beautiful beings leap gracefully from the sea and swimming right in front of you! Whales are gorgeous mysterious creatures and Sri Lanka is among the best places in the world to watch them in their natural habitat.
